A UK company has developed a technology that it says will reduce the rates of robberies and burglaries by 85 per cent, which will soon be launched in T&T. The SelectaDNA product range consists of glues, gels, greases and aerosols, each containing a unique DNA code, which can be used to mark and trace both property and criminals.
It works by marking property and robbers with an invisible DNA mist that cannot be washed off and remains present on skin and hair for between one or two weeks, and on clothes for up to six months. The solution glows bright blue under ultraviolet light. If equipment is stolen and recovered, police can link it directly with the crime scene, not only enabling the property to be returned to its owner, but also increasing the chance of conviction.
The Selectamark Security Systems plc, a UK-based company, says its product is available in over 20 countries and has been integrated into the police and domestic systems throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, USA, Canada, Latin America, and most recently, Jamaica. It says there has been an 85 per cent reduction in theft and burglary in the UK and New Zealand, showing a 55 per cent decrease within the first four months of its use.
The company believes its product will dramatically reduce the high rates of larceny, burglaries and robberies in T&T from 4,531 cases as of April 2012.
