Reversing the result from the first leg encounter, Harvard Rugby Club returned to the top of the T&T Rugby Football Union (T&TFRU) Toyota Championship Division standings after crushing reigning Caribs 31-5 at Caribs Ground, Queen's Park Savannah, yesterday. With both teams heading into the fixture with the same number of matches played, the win put Harvard three points ahead of the "Beer Boys," with just two rounds remaining, giving Harvard an advantage in search of its first ever senior rugby trophy.
Harvard started stronger and quickly got off the mark on the quarter-hour when Claudius Butts scored under the post. His try was subsequently converted by Ryan Hinckson, putting Harvard up 7-0. However, it took Caribs just five minutes to respond via a Jason Clarke try, which went unconverted. The resulting turn of events, saw Caribs' Ronald Silverthorne yellow-carded for carrying his momentum over the top of a ruck, triggered a Harvard penalty which Rowell Gordon pounced on to score.
An additional try from David Gokool soon after the second, was followed with a third successful conversion by Hinckson, giving Harvard a 21-5 lead at half time. Harvard's lead increased in the second half, beginning with an early try from Cloyd London, which was converted by Hinckson, followed 20 minutes later by a successful penalty, again from Hinckson. Caribs' day went from bad to worse when Andre Cabrera was sent off, red card, in the dying moments of the match, epitomising a poor evening from the usually ruthless champions.
