Presentation College of San Fernando and its coach Shawn Cooper will be confident of taking another giant step towards being crowned South Zone BGTT/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League champions when it faces cellar-placed Moruga in the first match of a double-header at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, from 3 pm today.
So far this season, Presentation, led by the in-form Shackiel Henry who has netted 16 goals in nine matches, has amassed maximum 27 points from nine matches to be the lone team with a 100 per cent winning record in all five zones and with a victory over Moruga, which it clobbered 6-0 in the first round, can claim the zonal title ahead of schedule if defending champions Shiva Boys, eight points behind with a match in hand, fail to beat Princes Town at the David Williams Recreation Ground, Penal from 3.45 pm.
In the other match at Marabella, third-placed former champions, Naparima and Pleasantville do battle from 5 pm. Up in the North, all eyes will be focused on the "Battle of the Saints" at Westmoorings where reigning zonal and national champions, St Anthony's welcomes St Mary's to the "Tiger Den." When both teams met in the first round, the "Tigers," who lead with 21 points from nine matches, clawed St Mary's 3-0 and a similar result will keep them on course for a successful title defence.
However, should the visiting "Saints," third with 14 points, manage to halt its rival 28-match unbeaten run dating back to the start of last year, it will throw the title race wide open with East Mucurapo, second with 18 points and on a bye, also in the fray. Fatima, coming off a 3-3 draw with Queen's Royal College, but still in the mix with 14 points, will seek a better result away to Diego Martin North in the zone's other match.
With East Zone leaders' Arima North (21 points) on a bye today, the chasing trio of San Juan North (17 pts), defending champion El Dorado East (16), and St Augustine (14), will all have chances to close the gap at the top with victories today at home to Toco, Trinity East and El Dorado West. In the Central Zone, defending champion and front-runners Carapichaima East with 15 points from six matches is expected to have little trouble at home to cellar-placed Gasparillo which it hammered 8-1 in their first round meeting led by the league's top scorer in Shaquille Holder who has 19 goals to his name.
However, second-placed Chaguanas North, a point behind will also need to pick up full points against third-placed Couva West which is blanked 3-0 in round one to stay in the title race ahead of their top-of-the-table showdown on October 20, while Presentation and Tabaquite meet at Presentation.
Over in Tobago, leaders Scarborough, buoyed by its 1-0 victory over rivals Signal Hill to move to ten points from four matches, can take a big step towards to the title with a victory over second placed-Speyside which is four points behind, when the two face off at the Dwight York Stadium Training Ground, Bacolet.
Mason Hall and Roxborough, both yet to get a win this season from three and two matches respectively meet at Plymouth Recreation Ground in the other match.
