Double Olympic medallist Lalonde Gordon was honoured at the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Chief Secretary awards following his performance at the London Olympic Games in August. The ceremony took place at the Victor E Bruce Building in Scarborough on Tuesday, in commemoration of Assembly Day.
Gordon along with sprinter Kelly-Ann Baptiste were recognised in the field of sports. The quarter-miler sped to bronze in the men's 400-metre finals in London in a personal best of 44.52 seconds to become the first Tobagonian to medal at the Olympics. He returned to lead T&T's men's 4x400m team to bronze in a national record of 2:59.40. Ade-Alleyne Forte, Jarrid Solomon and Deon Lendore were the other members.
Gordon also won the national (45.40) and the US Club Championships (45.02) one-lap titles. The New York-based athlete was not present and brother Ojai Gordon accepted the award on his behalf from Chief Secretary Orville London.
Baptiste was also honoured after becoming the first local woman to qualify for an Olympic final. The 2011 World Championships bronze medallist was sixth in the women's 100m dash in 10.96. In May, Baptiste clocked 10.86, the sixth fastest time of the year. Her mother Hazel Taylor collected the trophy for Baptiste, who was absent. Baptiste, of Plymouth village, won the award in 2010.
