Celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Visual Arts programme at the University of the West Indies will culminate with a grand exhibition featuring work of past and current students and faculty. The programme which began as two courses within the English department in 1986, became a certificate programme by the following year.
Today, the Visual Arts Unit offers both a Certificate and a Degree in Visual Arts, with an option of Fine Art or Design at degree level. At postgraduate level it offers a Masters in Design Entrepreneurship. Many prominent artists have been lecturers in the programme over the 25 years and the majority of art teachers in the country are graduates of the programme as well.
The 25th anniversary exhibition opens on tomorrow at 4 pm and will run until next Saturday at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts on Gordon St, St Augustine. A release from the organisers said the exhibition "will be an interesting moment to see the impact of the Visual Arts programme on the Trinidad and Tobago landscape."
Artists who will show work in the exhibition include current and former lecturers including Ken Crichlow, Sarah Beckett, Akuzuru, Deborah Clement and Elsa Clarke and current students and alumni including Kwynn Johnson, Arnaldo James, Darron Small, Alicia Milne, Sherlann Peters among others. http://www.facebook.com/events/510978898916871
