A 21-year-old construction worker was murdered metres away from his job site yesterday. According to police reports, shortly after 2 pm, Imo King, of Pashley Street, Laventille, was standing outside the Housing Development Corporation's (HDC) Trou Macaque building complex when a man accosted and shot him. His killing took the murder toll to 374.
An eyewitness told police after a short conversation the assailant drew a pistol and shot King several times in the chest. The gunman covered his face with his T-shirt and ran off through the housing complex to avoid being identified by residents, who responded when they heard the gunshots.
King was pronounced dead on the scene by a District Medical?Officer (DMO) who ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St?James, where a post-mortem will be done on Monday. Homicide detectives had not established a motive for King's murder up to late yesterday but believe it may be the result of an ongoing turf war among gangs in the area.
ASP Ajith Persad, Insp Sahadeo Singh and Cpl Charles Budree of the Port-of-Spain CID are probing the incident.
