This year's Sagi­cor Open Cham­pi­onships, set for June 25 and 26, have been post­poned af­ter per­sis­tent rains caused the com­ple­tion of the track at the Hase­ly Craw­ford Sta­di­um to be de­layed. This was an­nounced via a press re­lease by the NAAA yes­ter­day. Dur­ing the event's launch at the Hy­att Re­gency Trinidad on June 8, Per­ma­nent Sec­re­tary in the Min­istry of Sports and Youth Af­fairs Ash­win Creed said that the re­lay­ing of the new track was due to be com­plet­ed by June 17. How­ev­er, he did cau­tion that the works could be ham­pered by rain. Ger­man con­trac­tor Por­plas­tics has been giv­en the job to put down the new IAAF Cer­ti­fied Class 1 syn­thet­ic run­ning track to be com­plet­ed by June 15, but ac­cord­ing to a re­lease from the Sports Com­pa­ny of T&T (SPORTT), "the in­tense pre­cip­i­ta­tion over the last few weeks has se­vere­ly ham­pered the progress of the Ger­man con­trac­tor, Por­plas­tics.

Meinolf Meier, Spe­cial­ist En­gi­neer with Por­plas­tics has stat­ed that the in­stal­la­tion process re­quires ab­solute dry con­di­tions in or­der to en­sure the in­tegri­ty and dura­bil­i­ty of the track's struc­tured sur­face and un­der lay­er sup­port." The re­lease fur­ther stat­ed that the more than half the work was done and the Sports Com­pa­ny with work­ing with Pro­plas­tics to lessen any ad­di­tion­al de­lays. "The project is 80% com­plete, how­ev­er the fi­nal stage will re­quire at least 14 full days with­out pre­cip­i­ta­tion in or­der to be fin­ished. "The Sports Com­pa­ny (SPORTT) is work­ing with Por­plas­tics min­imise any fur­ther de­lays on the project. The Com­pa­ny is al­so ex­am­in­ing con­tin­gency plans in or­der to fa­cil­i­tate the needs of all the sta­di­um's key stake­hold­ers. SPORTT re­mains com­mit­ted to en­sur­ing that this sig­nif­i­cant in­vest­ment in the Sta­di­um's in­fra­struc­ture meets the high­est in­ter­na­tion­al stan­dards and yields the max­i­mum re­turn on the funds al­lo­cat­ed."
