Two police officers have appeared before a Couva magistrate charged with six offences, including falsely imprisoning a Central businessman and his 18-year-old friend.They appeared in court hours after surrendering themselves at the Couva Police Station.Yesterday, Constables Adil Khan, 31, of Princes Town, and and Wayne Maul, 40, of Carapichaima, stood before Magistrate Debra Quintyne, charged with committing the offences on June 24, 2011.They were each granted $200,000 surety bail.The police officers, accompanied by their attorneys, Pamela Elder, SC, and Richard Mason, walked into the Couva Police Station shortly before 9 am where they handed themselves over after warrants were issued for their arrest.
Around 12.15 pm, the officers appeared before the court charged with robbery with aggravation, false imprisonment, demanding money by menace, assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Vishal Balgobin and Aatma Ramesar and misbehaviour in public office.All six offences are alleged to have occurred at Couva. The charges were laid by Cpl Brian Stoddard.Elder, in her application for bail, said Khan had several commendations to his name and had ten years' service.Maul, she said, was assigned to Couva Task Force and also had several commendations to his name.Quintyne granted the men bail and adjourned the matter to July 21.
