Minority Leader in the Tobago House of Assembly Ashworth Jack believes that the issue of compensation to UK couple Peter and Murium Green should be put to rest.Jack was responding to a question at the bi-monthly minority leader's news conference on Tuesday, about his thoughts of the proposed TT$25,000 to be given to the couple. He said people should be careful about the signal sent because it would only be to the disadvantage of Tobago."I think that it is a situation that we need to be careful with how we deal with it," Jack said.
"The Greens are not singular in being victims of crime...I don't know what the policy is, but I think we should be very careful."I want to empathise with the Greens with what has happened and I hope it does not happen to anyone else, but I think what has happened in the last couple of years is a sensationalising of a matter that is only working to the detriment of Tobago."Jack said the competent authority should expedite the situation in terms of quantum.
Justice Minister Herbert Volney said on Monday that he was prepared to seek Cabinet approval for a sum exceeding $25,000 to assist with the medical expenses of UK couple Peter and Murium Green who were attacked in Tobago in 2009.The British couple, of Somerset, survived a cutlass attack while they slept on the porch of their Bacolet home in Tobago in 2009.In April, the case against their alleged attacker, Clint Alexis, 25, of Argyle, Tobago was discharged.Peter Green was left blind in one eye, has head injuries and is now partially disabled, while his wife Murium was slashed across the face in the attack. They are said to have had numerous facial reconstruction operations.
