Several of the country's top track and field stars will not be competing at this weekend's Sagicor National Open Track and Field Championships. The Games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, after which the team to represent T&T at the World Games will be revealed. Among those who will not be taking part are Cleopatra Borel Brown, Richard Thompson, Renny Quow and Kelly Ann Baptiste. Commonwealth silver medallist Borel confirmed yesterday she will not returning home for the meet.Borel said she has opted to rest after her fifth place finish at the Aviva Grand Prix in England on the weekend. Borel noted that this will not affect her selection to the national team for the World Games since she will be travelling to Daegu, South Korea next week for the meet which will begin on August 27.
Baptiste and Quow have asked to be exempted from the meet but both have already attained the qualifying standard for the Games and are certain to be selected. On Saturday Baptiste blazed to a second place in 10.97 seconds at the Aviva Grand Prix while Quow took the Central American Championships title in Puerto Rico in July. Double Olympic silver medallist Thompson also sought an exemption and is unlikely to be in the line up. His manager Emmanuel Hudson said Thompson sought an exemption but is still awaiting a decision. According to Hudson the Association indicated that such a facility could not be extended to the defending double national sprint champion but discussion is still on going. The Los Angeles based agent said no final decision has been taken but added that competing in Trinidad this weekend will be difficult for Thompson. Another sprinter who has attained the qualifying standard, Keston Bledman is still to decide if he will be taking part. Confirming participation was Emmanuel Callender while Marc Burns is expected in the country today.
