T&T has competed in all previous editions of the IAAF World Outdoor Championships and has won nine medals (one gold, four silver and four bronze). Ato Boldon captured the country's first medal in 1995 in Gotenburg, Sweden when he raced to bronze in the men's 100m in 10.03 (national record). Two years later in Athens, Greece he collected the first and only gold medal, taking the men's 200m in 20.04. The four-time Olympic medallist has also collected the most medals with four in total along with Darrel Brown. Boldon's tally consists of one gold, one silver (4x100 - 2001) two bronzes (100 - 1995/2001). Darrel Brown collected four silvers (100 - 2003, 4x100 - 2001/2005/2009). Marc Burns has earned three (4x100 - 2001/2005/2009) and is going for a fourth in Daegu.
Josanne Lucas became this country's first female medallist after she raced to bronze in the women's 400m hurdles in 53.20 (national record) in Berlin, Germany two years ago. Michael Paul was this country's first finalist when he finished seventh in the men's 400m finals in 45.80 at the inaugural meet in Helsinki, Finland in 1983. Candace Scott was the first female to make to the final round finishing ninth (67.73m) in the women's hammer throw in Paris, France in 2003.
Brown holds the record as the youngest medallist in the men's 4x100m event. At 16 years 305 days, he anchored T&T's 4x100m team to silver in 2001. Two years later he became the youngest 100m finalist and medallist taking silver in Paris, France at 18 years 318 days. Jehue Gordon is the youngest finalist and competitor in the men's 400m hurdles. In Berlin, Germany two years ago, Gordon was fourth in the finals in 48.26 seconds at the age of 17 years 276 years. In Daegu, he will seek to become the youngest medallist in the event. In the men's 4x400m event Renny Quow is the youngest finalist. At 17 years 354 days he ran the second leg for T&T's quartet in Helsinki, Finland. The team was disqualified in the finals.
