A woman who exhibited severe signs of postpartum depression has died after she ingested a poisonous substance over the weekend. Dead is Kamalita Rajaram Motilal, 28, of 456 St Julien Road, Sancho Road, New Grant. Police said around 3.30 pm on September 9, Moonilal left her New Grant home and purchased a bottle of Gramoxone which she ingested. She was found in a semi-conscious state at the Naparima/Mayaro Road.
Passers-by alerted the police who rushed her by ambulance to the San Fernando General Hospital. Attempts were made to pump the poison out of her stomach. However, she died at 2 am on Saturday. An autopsy conducted by Dr Hubert Daisley at the San Fernando mortuary revealed that she died from multiple organ failure, consistent with poison ingestion. Motilal's husband Kumar told police that she was severely depressed after giving birth. PC Ali of the Princes Town Police Station is continuing investigations.
