Shandy Carib Magnolias I (women) and Malvern (men) went into the semifinals of the Paragon Hockey Club 40th anniversary Youth (Under-21) Tournament as top seeds after topping their respective round-robin groups at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, Hamilton-Holder Street, Woodbrook, yesterday.
In the four-club women's tournament, Magnolias had wins over Paragon (1-0), Magnolias II (4-0) and (3-1) while it drew three times. Twice against Ventures twice (0-0) and (1-1) and once against Paragon (0-0) to end with 12 points, one ahead of Paragon. Ventures ended the round-robin series with nine points while Magnolias II were pointless.
In yesterday's semifinals, Magnolias I came up against Magnolias II while Paragon and Ventures faced off in the other. The men's series was much closer as Malvern, Queen's Park and Notre Dame all completed their five-match campaign with nine points. Malvern and the Parkites also had a similar goal-difference of plus-three while the Dames ended with a plus-two aggregate with Corona Fatima fourth on seven points.
However, Malvern emerged as group winners after it won a coin toss with the Parkites and came up against Fatima in its semifinal.Queen's Park battled the Dames in the other semis. In the schools competition, Holy Name Convent (PoS) and South East Port-of-Spain qualified for the girls' finals from their three-team round-robin tournament which also included St Augustine Girls' High School Combined, and in the boys' decider, Fatima came up against North Gate. St Mary's also competed in the boys' event.
