Chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA), Dr Lackram Bodoe, says he is heartened and pleased by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar's decision to have her grandson Kristiano, five, treated at the San Fernando General Hospital for suspected dengue. "The fact that she chose to bring her grandson to San Fernando General Hospital, reflects the confidence she has placed in the facility and the confidence she has in the doctors and nurses to administer proper care to him," Bodoe said yesterday.
He said doctors continued to treat new dengue cases daily at the hospital. Bodoe said Kristiano underwent further blood tests yesterday and was still being treated for suspected dengue. "His condition remains stable. From what I have been told, he will be kept for another 24 hours for treatment and observation," he added. SWRHA's acting chief executive officer, Anil Gosine, confirmed the boy's platelets were over 100, "meaning he is okay. He looks much better than he did yesterday."Kristiano was admitted to the paediatric ward of the hospital by his parents, Kris and Avianne, on Sunday after he fell ill at Persad-Bissessar's private residence at Phillipine, South Trinidad.
His grandmother spent part of Sunday afternoon and night at his bedside in the heavily-secured ward.
The Prime Minister also was infected by the virus about five weeks ago. Seven-year-old Sarah Ovid, who lived at Block Five, Palmiste, close to the PM's home, died from dengue two weeks ago. Ovid's younger sister also was treated and discharged.
