Secretary general of the Organisation of American States Jose Miguel Insulza says public safety has become the most important issue for most members states.Insulza was addressing the opening of the Third Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas (MISPA 111) at the Hyatt Regency, Port of Spain, yesterday.
The issues of police management and public safety were among the key discussion points at the two-day event, which concludes today.He said there was a need for member countries to continue to contribute with a view to ensure the desired objectives of the meeting were met.He listed six key issues that would be considered by the heads of government/State at that summit; natural disasters, poverty and inequality, access to technology, physical integration, regional co-operation and citizen security.
He said the OAS Secretariat has directed its human and technical resources to promote "co-operation among member states on public security management, prevention of crime, violence and insecurity, citizen and community participation and police management."He stressed special attention would be paid to the issue of police management during the meeting. He said the whole of society was required if there was to be any successful attempt to ensure public safety among OAS member states. (RL)
