Principal of the Tunapuna Hindu School, Sita Gajadharsingh-Nanga, resumed duties at the school yesterday, 14 days after an agreement was made with the Ministry of Education for her to do so. Education Minister Tim Gopeesingh said he was advised she was accompanied by three representatives from the T&T Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) and a school supervisor. He was speaking to the media after the closing of the Secondary School Principals Workshop at Crowne Plaza, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. Gopeesingh said the school supervisor held a brief meeting with the school's staff at which two board members were present. He said he had been advised by the chief education officer that the board members would meet again with the supervisors from the district office and continue to facilitate school operations.
Gopeesingh said the principal would remain at the school until the Teaching Service Commission made recommendations on the way forward. He added: "Whether they will facilitate her transfer to another school, another board school or a Government school and whether she will remain in the position of principal or not is to be recommended by the Teaching Service Commission." After a meeting on November 21 an eight-point agreement was reached among the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, the ministry and TTUTA. TTUTA had revealed that the principal had made requests regarding her safety before she could resume duties. Asked whether or not these requests were granted or a compromise had been reached, Gopeesingh said the presence of the principal and the TTUTA representatives indicated a compromise may have been reached.
