Kayann Corn­wall, who was shot in the chest at La Ro­maine on Mon­day night, has un­der­gone a six-hour emer­gency surgery to re­move a bul­let and re­pair a rup­tured lung and stom­ach.The 23-year-old own­er of Nails Ga­lore Beau­ty Shop, at Low­er High Street, San Fer­nan­do, is still crit­i­cal and is ward­ed in the In­ten­sive Care Unit of the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal. The bul­let which en­tered the left side of the chest, missed her heart but trav­elled down­wards, punc­tur­ing her stom­ach and lungs.

A rel­a­tive said Corn­wall was con­scious but was heav­i­ly se­dat­ed.The rel­a­tive added: "She is re­spond­ing by open­ing her eyes, nod­ding and squeez­ing hands. Doc­tors claim the surgery was suc­cess­ful, but she is not yet out of dan­ger."The rel­a­tive said the po­lice have not been able to ques­tion her, so they are in the dark about what tran­spired.Her moth­er re­turned from the Unit­ed States on Wednes­day and was re­port­ed­ly at her daugh­ter's side, pray­ing for re­cov­ery.South­ern Di­vi­sion Po­lice who are in­ves­ti­gat­ing are still search­ing for the weapon in­volved in the shoot­ing which oc­curred while she was vis­it­ing a male friend.

Po­lice have ques­tioned a La Ro­maine man and his moth­er in con­nec­tion with the shoot­ing, de­scribed as ac­ci­den­tal.The moth­er was re­leased but the 20-year-old man up to late was yes­ter­day as­sist­ing po­lice with their in­ves­ti­ga­tion.Corn­wall's rel­a­tives said yes­ter­day they did not be­lieve the shoot­ing was ac­ci­den­tal as was be­ing al­leged.The rel­a­tives, who want­ed to re­main anony­mous due to fear that the shoot­er may be af­fil­i­at­ed to a gang, said they want­ed to know the cir­cum­stances sur­round­ing the in­ci­dent.

"Our rel­a­tive is fight­ing for her life at the ICU and there seems to be a cov­er-up by cer­tain peo­ple," one rel­a­tive stat­ed."What was this man do­ing with a gun? What is his lifestyle? Who took Kayann to the hos­pi­tal? Why was it that the hos­pi­tal had to re­port the shoot­ing to the po­lice?" the fam­i­ly mem­ber asked.
