An Army recruit has sued the State after suffering injuries during a fall during a training exercise. Camille Browne, 29, of 16 Third Street West, Rowland Gardens, Trincity, is claiming damages for the injuries she sustained in an early morning exercise at the Regiment's Chaguaramas base. In the lawsuit, filed by attorney Anil Maraj, Browne is claiming that at about 1.30 am on December 26, 2005 an all-female batch of recruits was given an order by instructor Sgt Lezama to climb a hill, called the "Hingee", located near the base.
She was enlisted on December 6, 2005. This order was given as a punishment to the entire batch for the alleged insubordination of one recruit, Caines. According to Browne, under the dark and rainy conditions, Caines was running ahead of the claimant and crashed into her. The claimant rolled down the hill and stopped when she struck a tree stump with her back. She suffered injuries to her neck and back and was later transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital to treat her injuries. The claimant is claiming damages, interest, costs and any other relief deemed fit. The matter is expected to come up for hearing next month.
