“My name is Sherwin Wong. I am an insurance sales manager at Guardian Life, where I’ve been employed for the last 16 years. As a single parent, I share a special bond with my two sons, Giovanni, 20, and Zachary, seven.
Being a single father can be overwhelming at times trying to find a balance with my profession, and parenthood. I have learned to prioritise and put my boys first, whether it’s homework, football practice, or even cooking meals that they will enjoy.
I believe that given the current society in which we live, I have an added responsibility to guide my sons and provide them with opportunities that I didn’t have growing up. In today’s world, with the influence of social media and the abundance of information, it is crucial for us as parents to stay close to our children and ensure we provide them with accurate guidance. Working with this purpose in mind ensures their happiness, and when you’re all together, the house fills with joy and laughter.
The Guardian Media Dad Makeover allowed me to create precious memories with my older son, Giovanni. Throughout the experience, we laughed, played, and shared unforgettable moments. Dressing up was a lot of fun, and I will always cherish this remarkable experience. Meeting Peter Elias was an honour, and I would like to extend my congratulations to him for participating in such an inspiring event.
Thank you once again for providing such a wonderful experience.”
5 things I do for self-care
1. Every week, I go to Maracas Beach, where I sit and enjoy my company, reflecting on my thoughts.
2. Every night before bed, I spend at least an hour reading a book, reflecting, planning and gathering my thoughts for the next day.
3. I am an avid cyclist, I cycle 50 miles every Saturday from D’Abadie to Sangre Grande and back.
4. I have a group of friends, and we have been pals for 20 years; we spend time together cooking, laughing and talking.
5. I am a vintage car enthusiast. I recently bought a 1974 Corolla and I am restoring it with my sons.
Achieving the makeover look
According to Peter Elias, businessman, and fashion designer/stylist who did the fashion makeover for Wong and his son, separate blazers and mixing colours and patterns are on point for the modern man. He paired classic slim-fit chinos and a burgundy tapered blazer. The mixed-print shirt and pocket square added a touch of flare.
Turtlenecks and patterned slim trousers are a mainstay, Elias said. Turtlenecks are now made from lightweight cool cotton knits so it’s almost like a T-shirt. Pairing the patterned pants and the solid turtleneck looks smart and can be worn formally with a contrast blazer, he added.
Father/son twinning–The turtlenecks and sunglasses make them look trending and on point. Turtlenecks paired with shorts and statement sneakers have become another popular trend.
