This past week has seen a confluence of events that appear to mark a turning point in this country's affairs, such that it may give us some hope for our immediate future.
The rescue of a kidnap victim and the picture of the Commissioner of Police confirming her safe return did generate a lift not only among the general public but importantly among the rank and file of the security forces.
One member of the public was heard to say that there was a noticeable spring in the step of police officers in particular.
The reality is that the members of the Police Service have been pounded so severely over the past years that we welcome any improvement in their fortunes.
It was evident in Commissioner Griffith's address to the Chaguanas Chamber of Commerce that he too had absorbed some of the punishing statements made about the service.
But he turned the table when he encouraged us to put ourselves in their boots and in particular the shoes of the families of the police officers who venture from their homes every day "to protect and serve".
He got straight to the point in his appeal to the public to step up their cooperation with the police and not to let the actions of a few continue to taint the reputation of the force.
Commissioner Griffith is obviously under tremendous pressure to deliver on his mandate, and he used his communication skills to deliver a clear message to those who either support his efforts or the criminal elements who could thwart them.
This country has reached a stage where any good news is very welcomed, but we side with the Commissioner in his caution not to expect miracles.
It is clear that some in our community are unconvinced by this early success, but that is only natural. Those who expect that the police will suddenly find all the missing persons and arrest all the criminals must appreciate that policing is not an easy task.
The Commissioner and his top officers detailed on Friday how they intend to pursue the tasks they have undertaken with the use of the latest tools and technology to aid in speeding up their investigations.
We encourage the public to answer the call of the leadership of the police and support the security forces. It is the only way that we can expect to rebuild our country as a safe and secure place to live, work and enjoy.
