After months of turbulence, the Caribbean tourism industry is showing signs of growth, following a downturn in 2009. This is according to the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), which held its annual summit in Barbados on Wednesday, BBC Caribbean reported that the CTO announced that arrival numbers to the Caribbean are rising, hotels are seeing their revenues gradually increase and they are expecting further growth this year. CTO chairman, Ricky Skerrit of St Kitts and Nevis, said barring any international or regional unforeseen economic or social trauma in 2011, the indicators of Caribbean tourism performance should continue to move in a positive direction.
...calls on regional airlines to stop squabbling
The chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) has called on officials and government representatives from both LIAT and Caribbean Airlines to stop their public squabbling over routes. The report stated that a suggestion by Caribbean Airlines that it was interested in flying routes operated by LIAT has met strong opposition from some of LIAT's shareholder governments. At issue is said to be the tone of the comments and worries about competition. Now, the CTO chairman says it's time for a different approach. He said the CTO has offered to mediate in the discussions. Global News Staff
