President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Luis Alberto Moreno will deliver a special feature address at the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference which runs from February 7-9 at the Hyatt Regency, Trinidad. The theme of the conference, which is being hosted by the Energy Chamber, is Energy and Investment. Moreno is expected to expand on the issue of stimulating investment into renewable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean. His special insight will be of value to Trinidad and Tobago as the country takes its first steps towards implementing our own renewable or alternative energy projects.
Moreno's presence at the conference affirms the strong relationship the Energy Chamber has built with the IDB over the past decade. In 2005, the two organizations joined hands for the Safe to Work (STOW) project. STOW is a health, safety and the environment (HSE) certification scheme to prequalify contractors for work in the energy sector. The programme is being implemented by the Energy Chamber, in collaboration with the major energy sector companies and is funded by a generous grant from the IDB, through the Multi-lateral Investment Fund.
At last year's Energy Conference, executives of 17 of the major oil, gas, petro-chemical and heavy industrial companies in Trinidad & Tobago signed the STOW Charter, committing to adopt STOW certification as a mandatory pre-qualification requirement for all contractors and service companies. STOW could not have developed without painstaking work by the Energy Chamber, the leading energy sector companies and the assistance and guidance of the IDB, under the leadership of Mr. Moreno. He was reelected for one additional term of five years during a special meeting of the Board of Governors of the Bank held on July 6, 2010.
