A call for more businesses on former sugarcane lands was made by Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagessar. Nagessar said the Borough Council wants to stop several housing development projects being undertaken by the Estate Management  Business Development Company (EMBD). He was addressing the opening of the new $25 million Super Quality Supermarket at Endeavour Road, Chaguanas yesterday. The investment is the third in a chain of supermarkets, owned and operated, by the Khan family of Couva.

Nagessar said the proposed housing lands would be better suited for business operations that would boost the economy of the area and provide much needed employment. Nagessar also said the borough council is currently engaged in talks with relevant authorities to improve the traffic flow to attract consumers and investors. Rudranath Indarsingh, the Minster in the Ministry of Labour Small and Micro Enterprise, said this latest investment in the busy Central borough would provide 100 jobs.

Billy Ali, president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Commerce, said small and mid-size investments were important for economic growth and providing local employment. Ali said small businesses such as groceries provide a substantial number of permanent jobs.
