ST JOHN’S—A travel and shopping incentive package between the Antigua-based Liat and the government of St Maarten will be unveiled soon following a recent agreement. Representatives of both sides have agreed to a plan of action to promote St Maarten, already known for its duty-free shopping, as a major eastern Caribbean shopping destination. “Both sides agreed on development of a travel and shopping incentive package that would be aimed at lowering the cost of shopping in St Maarten for regional travellers, including reduced airfares and discounted shopping in St Maarten, as well as options for discounts in other areas such as car rentals, hotel accommodation and restaurants,” a release from the airline stated.

St Maarten’s Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs, Franklin Meyers, said the initiative would target pre-Christmas shopper in the first instance with the possibility of extending the programme to other periods. Liat said the details of the programme will likely be finalised in a few days.
