The Chaguanas Borough Corporation will continue to crack down on businessmen who encroach on the road reserves says Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagessar. He was speaking with reporters at the opening of Andy's Ice-Cream Shop, Chaguanas Main Road, yesterday. Nagessar said the ice-cream shop was also investigated when complaints reached the borough that it was built on the road reserve.
Nagessar said the borough paid $30,000 to hire a surveyor who showed that the owners of the property were not in violation. The ice-cream shop, Nagessar said, represents a $5 million investment in the borough. The mayor said he was pleased to learn that the 35 employees of the establishment would share in the profits of the company.
Nagessar said surveys along the Endeavour Road revealed that a gas station had placed a gas pump on a road reserve. He said the owner was willing to remove the pump for the construction of a roundabout. The mayor said reclamation was in full swing at Ramsaran Street.
Nagessar said the maxi-taxi hub at the southern main road may be on private property. He said that matter was before the court and pointed out that the state may have to undertake compulsory acquisition to get the property, since Chaguanas cannot return to a state of chaos if the maxi taxis were to be placed on the roadway.
