Managing director of Ansa Technologies Aleem Hosein says even though the Occupational Safety and Health Authority enforces proper safety standards in T&T, citizens must also develop a culture of safety. He was speaking at a safety fair at Ansa Technologies at Cipero Road, San Fernando. Hosein called on corporate T&T to join Ansa Technologies in raising safety awareness.
"The real intention here is to bring about awareness to our employees, suppliers and key customers so they can be exposed to the products that we offer," Hosein said. He explained that employees were given free blood sugar testing, pressure tests, eye examinations as well as cancer screening. He also said Ansa Technologies had formed alliances with several companies in the United States to import "top of the line" safety products to T&T.
"We are now the local representatives for these products and we hope it will create a significant impact on improving safety in the environment," Hosein said. He added that AnsaTechnologies planned to go to schools to speak about safety so that youths will be exposed to proper safety standards from an early age.Meanwhile, Ian Sirju demonstrated how some of the products work.
One of the miracle products called Munox SR cleans up oilspills and remediate contaminated sites. Munox SR was developed in Florida and it is a consortium of natural bacteria in a chemical liquid form. When used on soil, Sirju said the product acts as a fertiliser. It also becomes food for marine life when used in water. Sirju also promoted a biodegradable product from the bark of the oak trees.
"Oak trees have a life span of over 200 years and each tree is stripped 16 times of its bark. After some research it was realised that oak bark has a high absorbing rate and can absorb oil and other hydrocarbons in the industry," Sirju said.He also added that the oak based product has an absorbancy ratio of 9.43 litres of oil per kg of absorbent whereas the nearest competitor has 5.4 litres per kg.
Manager of products and construction at Ansa Technologies, Gale Dulal, said the company also has a range of eye wear, earplugs, gloves, absorbent reusable cloths and helmets. She said the eyewear was smash proof. A hammer was used to pound a pair of sunglasses but it remained intact. Health Safety and Environment adviser Nigel Viarruel explained that safety was important not only in the workplace but in the home as well.
