Dr Hamid Ghany joins Guardian Media Ltd as managing editor/deputy managing director effective today.In this highly dynamic emerging media landscape, Dr Ghany will lead the content team in the area of News and Current Affairs across GML's radio, television, print and new media divisions.Dr Ghany's appointment is a key element of GML's drive towards convergence across its media group, as heralded by our recent launch of this country's first fully interactive digital newspaper, the Digital Guardian.
Dr Ghany brings to bear his wide and diverse body of knowledge which spans the academic arena.He served as the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus during the period 2004 to 2012 (two statutory terms).
Prior to this, he served as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from October 2003 to July 2004 and was Head of the Department of Behavioural Sciences at the UWI, St Augustine campus from August 1999 to September 2003. Dr Ghany holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the UWI, St Augustine Campus (1978).
He also holds a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from Fordham University, New York, USA (1982) and PhD degree in Constitutional Law and Government from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London (1987). Additionally, he served as a member of the Constitution Review Commission in Trinidad and Tobago between (1988-90) and as a member of the Tobago House of Assembly Technical Team for constitutional discussions with the Central Government of Trinidad and Tobago (1992-95).
He is currently a member of the Constitution Commission of Trinidad and Tobago which was appointed in March 2013, having also served as a member of the Drafting Committee for the St Vincent and the Grenadines Draft Constitution in 2009 as well as a member of the Round Table on Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago (2008-2010).
Dr Ghany also discharged duties as a member of the Mediation Board of Trinidad and Tobago (2005-2008) and served as a Commissioner on the Equal Opportunity Commission of Trinidad and Tobago (2008-2011).Dr Hamid Ghany is currently a regular Sunday Guardian columnist as well as GML's resident political analyst.He is married to Marilyn (n�e Mc Kinstry).
