Resilience as professional discipline
Resilience is often described as endurance, but in professional life, it is more accurately understood as discipline. It is the ability to remain grounded amid uncertainty and to exercise sound judgement in pursuit of meaningful outcomes.
This requires more than technical expertise. It calls for steadiness of character, clarity of purpose and the capacity to move forward with intention, even as circumstances evolve and expectations shift.
Creating paths, building momentum
Professional work is rarely linear. There are moments when the way forward is not immediately apparent, and progress depends on the ability to think beyond established routes. Professionals are often required to create pathways where none are clearly defined and to build momentum where progress may be difficult.
This calls for persistence, flexibility and adaptability, while remaining guided by principle. The destination may be clear, but the route is not always fixed. If the objective is to move north, there are many ways to get there. The responsibility is to ensure that whichever path is chosen remains aligned with ethical obligations and disciplined decision-making, with professional principles serving as a steady compass as conditions change.
In practice, this may mean recommending a different course of action when circumstances warrant it, or raising important questions when professional judgement suggests further consideration is needed. These are often the moments that distinguish technical competence from professional leadership.
Professional courage as the foundation
It is within this context that professional courage becomes especially important. Resilience in professional life is ultimately expressed through the decisions professionals make when circumstances are uncertain, expectations are competing and the way forward is not immediately apparent.
In recognition of Internal Audit Month, observed globally each May, it is fitting to reflect on the concept of Professional Courage, as articulated by the Institute of Internal Auditors through its IIA Global Internal Audit Standards, effective January 2025. The Institute of Internal Auditors remains the globally recognised professional body for internal auditors, advancing standards, ethics and professional practice.
Professional courage is the willingness to act in accordance with disciplined judgement and professional principles, particularly when circumstances are complex and outcomes are not guaranteed. It provides the foundation upon which resilience is built, enabling professionals to remain principled while adapting their approach to changing conditions.
Importantly, professional courage is not without cost. It may involve asking difficult questions, challenging prevailing views, or taking positions that are not immediately popular. Yet it is in these moments that the strength of professional discipline is most clearly demonstrated.
An evolving view of professionalism
The inclusion of professional courage within formal standards is, in itself, significant. Standards have traditionally focused on rules, processes and measurable requirements. The explicit recognition of a concept grounded in judgement, character and mindset signals an important evolution in professional thinking.
This evolution reflects a broader reality. Technical requirements can define what should be done, but they cannot anticipate every situation. As organisations become increasingly interconnected and operating environments more complex, discernment becomes critical. Professionals are valued not only for what they know, but for how they apply that knowledge, how they respond to ambiguity and how they navigate competing demands.
By recognising professional courage, standards acknowledge that professionalism extends beyond compliance. They reinforce the expectation of personal responsibility, principled action and the willingness to bridge the gap between knowing what is right and doing what is right.
Rules and frameworks remain essential, but they do not eliminate interpretation. Professional courage ensures that standards are applied with integrity and consistency, particularly in circumstances that require careful judgement rather than straightforward application.
Its importance is evident across industries. Studies by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners consistently show that tips are a leading method of detecting occupational fraud globally. Behind many of these disclosures is an individual who chose to raise a concern or question an irregularity. While not every instance involves fraud, the underlying principle remains the same: professional courage often reveals itself in the decision to act when silence would be easier.
It is through such decisions that organisations are strengthened, risks are surfaced earlier and trust is preserved.
The Role of Professional Bodies
Professional bodies reinforce this foundation by establishing standards, supporting development and promoting accountability. They provide a shared framework that enables professionals to act with consistency and credibility while encouraging continuous learning and disciplined judgement.
For the individual, alignment with a professional body signals a commitment to competence, integrity and ongoing development. For the profession, it strengthens cohesion and reinforces public trust.
The impact extends further. Strong professions contribute to strong institutions and strong institutions contribute to national development. The quality of decisions made within organisations and public bodies ultimately shapes the quality of outcomes experienced by citizens, customers and communities.
Whether in business, healthcare, engineering, education, law, accounting, or public service, societies rely on professionals to exercise sound judgement in areas where expertise matters. By promoting standards, ethical conduct and accountability, professional bodies help create the conditions for that judgement to be exercised responsibly.
They do not replace individual responsibility. Rather, they provide a framework within which it can be exercised with confidence and consistency, helping professionals remain grounded in complexity and prepared to act with integrity when it matters most.
A Steady Commitment
Resilience finds expression through disciplined judgement, steadfast principles and the courage to act when circumstances demand it. It enables professionals to respond to complexity with clarity, adapt with confidence, and contribute with purpose to their organisations, their professions and the wider society they serve.
At a time when organisations are navigating rapid technological change, economic uncertainty, and increasing stakeholder expectations, the demand for professional judgement has never been greater. The future will not be shaped solely by technical expertise, but by professionals who combine competence with character, adaptability with principle and ambition with responsibility.
Professional courage sits at the heart of that equation. It provides the foundation upon which resilience is built and ensures that effectiveness is sustained over the long term.
Ultimately, resilience is proven in moments of ambiguity, when the path forward is unclear and decisions carry weight. In those moments, judgement shapes credibility and courage defines professionalism.
