Carnival 2012
Some serious rains only served to fire up patrons at Saturday’s Old Hilarians all-inclusive fete.

Soca artiste Kerwin Dubois had fete lovers eating out of his hands from the minute he graced the stage at the 16th annual Old Hilarians All Inclusive held at O2 Park Chaguaramas on a very rainy Saturday evening.

In fact, patrons, armed with umbrellas, were heard complaining that the Runaway singer should have been allotted more time to perform his solo hits.Dubois, whose C2K12 offerings continue to blaze the airwaves appeared on-stage during Destra’s hour-and-a-half long stint to perform their collaborative hit Baddist. However, when Dubois started to sing one of his popular tracks, Bacchanalist, he was cut short by Destra, who declared that she was the original bacchanalist, reminding the crowd of her 2009 Carnival hit, Bacchanal. And although it was all done in fun, some patrons did not seem pleased.“Oh gosh Destra, let d man have his time too nah. You could come off now!” grumbled one female patron.

Another male party-goer echoed similar sentiments, declaring, “Why Destra keep interrupting d man so? Let him sing his song!”Destra then continued her repertoire which included Tremble It, Max It Up and Fireworks and also took the opportunity to perform her new single Link Up which she said was only released a few days ago.In an interview afterwards, Dubois told the T&T Guardian that he “felt great” to be recognised for his hard work having been in the soca industry for almost ten years. He confessed though that while he had penned some of the more popular soca tunes over the years, he “doesn’t really listen to soca.” His genre of choice? Jazz music. “People will be surprised that I really don’t listen to soca. I really love jazz,” said Dubois, who also stated that his long term-term plan was to help the local genre realise its full potential.“We need to have soca music standing on its own and not being categorised under world music,” he said.

Wining, chipping, eating
Earlier, new soca artiste K Rich opened the show and displayed his melodic vocals with his song, Nothing Less. Patrons who forked out $750 to attend the event were also treated to performances from Blaxx and Roy Cape All Stars who delivered a riveting performance. The band introduced its new front-line singers, former Imij and Company vocalist, Ricardo Drue and American-born Darnella Simmons. Simmons, whose parents are Trinidadian told us that it was “really surreal” to be performing with the band as she “loved soca music.” Radio DJs turned soca artistes TC and Shal Marshall delivered their popular Carnival offerings, Action and Trouble, respectively, much to the delight of fans.

Road March Kings of 2010 JW and Blaze were their usual animated and energetic selves performing their C2K12 track, We Time, which had patrons jumping and waving despite the inclement weather, which one woman came super prepared for by donning a shower cap with her trendy outfit. And backed by sexy female and male dancers, reigning Groovy Soca Monarch Kees kept the tempo going and showed why he is still a force to be reckoned with for Carnival. He delivered some of his hits including Precision Wine, Come Gyal, Coming Over and of course the song which earned him the crown in the first place, Wotless. Throughout the evening, patrons were seen wining, chipping, eating and drinking in the rain, thanks to a wide selection of delicacies and drinks conveniently situated throughout the Chaguaramas venue. The fete ended at 10.30 pm, half an hour later than scheduled.
