Carnival 2012

It was an explosion in San Fernando on January 20, as two of the biggest soca artistes in the world performed on one stage, with a bit of taunting taking place. Lollabee Cellular’s Xperience fete drew one of largest audiences for the 2012 Carnival calendar. Held on the beautiful San Fernando Hill, thousands had to be shuttled up the car park of the Visitor Centre for the epic episode. The defending Soca Monarch champion Machel Montano was flown in on a private jet from Tobago by Lollabees Cellular just for the event.

Screams rang out at the mere mention of his name. “Mr Fete” ran onto the stage in a fiery mood, and as he performed, he could not help but tease Iwer George about having to settle for second place once again at the this year’s Soca Monarch competition. “They’re not ready yet,” Machel said of George and other big name contenders in the competition, before proceeding to mash up the place with his 2011 title winning song, Advantage, We Revelling, Mr Fete and Vibes Cyah Done. After his stint, fans cried out for more and he gave them just what they wanted.

But although Montano’s performance was superb, Iwer was not to be outdone and had patrons climbing and wining all over the fences. The former soca monarch and road march champ created waves with 2012 hit, Feel No Pain, especially with his opening catch phrase: “If you know they rob me last year, put your two hands in the air.” He put on quite a show with some of his previous hits such as Ah Reach and Gimme Ah Bligh. Even as his performance ended, fans kept chanting: “Iwer! Iwer!” The sensational Swappi and his dancers also put on an energetic show for patrons, buckets and all, before splashing the audience with water. Also in the line-up were the band Karma, Millionaire Family, Blaxx, Lil Bits, Umi Marcano and Chucky.
