On a night when humorous calypsonians reigned supreme, it was the classy touch of three-time Canadian Calypso Monarch Protector that had patrons at the Kaiso Showcase begging for more. There was barely an empty seat at OWTU's Palm Club at San Fernando last Friday for the opening night of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (Tuco) South tent. Among the hundreds present were Arts and Multiculturalism Minister and former Extempo King Winston "Gypsy" Peters, San Fernando Mayor Marlene Coudray and her husband, Industrial Court Judge Larry Achong. Humorous calypsonians such as San Fernando Extempo King Hezekiah Joseph, Mr Nature and Mr Mack and Cyclops had tears flowing from spectators' eyes as they laughed uncontrollably.
Joseph in particular, with his catchy tune, It's Alleged, sang about Crime Watch show host Ian Alleyne which proved to be entertaining. The diminutive comedian Cyclops continued with his absurd and witty selection E Jockey. However, the show belonged to Michael Leggerton (Protector), who had patrons dancing and waving in their seats to his heart warming selection entitled Prayer of My Heart. It was a song in which he called upon God to keep the nation together. Another well received performance was that of Tuco's South Central president Steve Pascall (Ras Kommanda), who commanded the attention of the audience with his calypso Nothing Wrong. The show which contained a mixture of mediocrity and convincing performances saw artistes such as Lady Adanna, SHY and an energetic Jeromy Rodriguez of St Mary's Government Primary receiving hearty receptions from the audience.
