Carnival 2012

The top prize of $6,000 and a crown is up for grabs when the Couva Carnival Committee stages its annual  Carnival Queen show on February 18. The free show comes off at the Couva Public Car Park. Showtime is 7.30 pm. Ramchand Rajbal Maraj, chairman of the Couva Carnival Committee, said last weekend that the committee was planning the most spectacular Carnival   in Couva since official activities started six decades ago.

He said 20 years ago, the committee started a full week of pre-Carnival shows leading to the two-day reign of the Merry Monarch. Prior to this, celebrations in the area took place only on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Rajbal said bandleaders who had contributed significantly to Couva mas would be recognised for their achievements. A budget of $483,000 has been set to cover all events for Carnival 2012. The theme for this year’s Couva Carnival is “Dis 20 Years Was Really Sweet. 2012 Will Be Hard to Beat.”
