Chairman of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation, Dave Persad, says Carnival in Couva has outgrown its present facilities at the Couva Car Park. He made the statement while addressing the launch of Couva Carnival on Wednesday night. Persad said 20 years ago when the Couva Carnival Committee started five days of festivities there were smaller crowds and less traffic.
Persad said since then the event has grown tremendously. He said the committee now had to look for another venue for its junior parade of the bands, queen show and calypso competition. Chairman of the Couva Carnival Committee, Ramchand Rajbal-Maharaj, said this year’s celebration was dedicated to the late Herman Roop Dass who died last year. Rajbal-Maharaj said Dass promoted carnival in the area since he started as a journalist with the T&T Guardian in the 1950s.
