Waterloo High School King of Carnival Michael Yearwood does a fire-breathing act as a red devil.

The students of Waterloo High School in Central Trinidad showed off their talent on Friday when the school staged its 11th annual masquerade and calypso competition. The calypso leg of the programme was won by Sherise Phillip who sang No Books. The “old mas” competition was won by students belonging to the Topaz group with their presentation of Trini Ways. Michael Yearwood, who portrayed Red Devil, won the King competition, while Larissa Vidal, portraying a burrokeet, copped the queen top prize. Patrice King, spokesperson for the event, said the programme augurs well into the school’s curriculum, adding that the school has been a beehive of activity for some time as classrooms became transformed into mini mas camps to prepare the students for the show. King said traditional mas was highlighted in a bid to ensure the survival of traditional mas characters.
