Dillon Thomas was crowned 2013 Tobago Young King at the Signal Hill Secondary School auditorium on Friday.
Thomas wooed the crowd and the judges with the song For A Crown, which examined the unethical means some calypsonians use to win a competition like stealing calypsoes sung by others and repeating lyrics from previous songs.
Thomas, who placed second in last year's Tobago Young King competition won his second trophy for the season after capturing the National Stars of Tomorrow Monarch on January 10.
The winning composition was written by Thomas' elder brother, calypsonian Sheldon Reid. The UWI Theatre Arts student is carrying on a family tradition as sisters Wendy Thomas Garrick and Nicole Thomas are also calypsonians. The 2012 winner Henson Wright had to settle for second with A Mad Man Diary.
Wright's composition was similar to last year's where he portrayed an insane man who reasoned that since he was mad he could sing the same calypso again. The Signal Hill resident took a critical look at the Government and the Tobago House of Assembly's performances.
Veteran singer Michael Baker finished third with One Day At A Time, in which he gave advice to high school students about living their lives one day at a time.
Jeremiah Combie rounded off the top four with Simple Africa.
Thomas, Wright and Baker represented Tobago at the National Young Kings final last night.
Other competitors were Opuke Ware (To Shadow with Love), Raulston Samuel (Mountains to Climb), Marvin Lewis (Pray) and Jude Hurdle (Rhythm of Steelband).
Reigning National Calypso Monarch and 2012 Young Kings winner Duane O'Connor, Tobago Rio, Tobago Calypso Queen Roslyn Reid and Tobago Jewels winner Michilia Williams were guests who entertained the audience which included Minister in Ministry of the People and Tobago West MP Vernella Alleyne-Toppin.
