Thursday, March 13, 2014

Chase Village Carnival captured the coveted Band of the Year title with its colourful presentation of Intruders-Invaders for Conquest when the Couva Carnival Committee (CCC) brought the curtain down on its festivities at the Couva Carpark on Carnival Tuesday.

Led by Danzo Ramroop and Indra Charles, the band registered its second consecutive victory and also took the Male Individual honours with Darren Shah portraying The Intruding Roman.

Placing second in the Band of the Year competition was Chaguanas-based Central Elite with Mirage, while Sword & Associates, hailing from California, was adjudged third.

In the Female Individual category, Watap Promotions captured the first two positions, with Carol James taking the title with Love Is From The Heart. Shenell Joseph placed second with Diamond is a Girl’s Best Friend.

The 2014 Couva Carnival was dedicated to Perseverance, Couva-based The Original Whipmasters, who presented the traditional jab jabs on both Carnival days. The iconic mas band is led by veteran Ronald Alfred and spans three generations of players.

Ramchand Rajbal Maraj, CCC chairman, said in a release, the committee was very happy with the Carnival celebrations in Couva which attracted thousands during the seven days of events.

“The pre-Carnival shows were of a high standard and were well received by the crowds on the day. Carnival Monday and Tuesday were exceptional. Everything went smoothly. We thank the Police Service, headed by Ag Senior Supt Johnny Abraham, Ag Supt Patricia Joseph and officers of the Couva Police for their reassuring presence. The crowds were well-behaved and we applaud them,” Maraj said.
