Thunderbolt Williams is facing dark days, but the champion wrestler, pan soldier and Despers Elder is not giving in to diabetes. He has lost a leg, but is determined to return to the ring as the "one-foot wrestler."And don't doubt this indomitable fighter, who has God as his tag team partner."With God, anything is possible," says Thunderbolt who has brought glory to the red, white and black. Facing this challenge, and new way of life, Thunderbolt admits that he needs help, genuine help; not a handout.
"I am hoping the Government comes on board and help me with my projects," says Thunderbolt, who has traversed the world."Everywhere I went I represented my country proudly, now I need my country."I am positive I will get the help I need," he says, confidently.Thunderbolt has been battling with the illness for some years now, but that has not stopped him dreaming.
One of his projects is the setting up of a wrestling academy at the site (now abandoned) at Duncan Street and Independence Square, Port-of-Spain."If I get that space, I can work wonders," he chirps. "I want the opportunity to pass on my knowledge."
Another of his projects is a national week of prayer. Why? Thunderbolt is unhappy with the way the nation is going."I am a patriot, and I don't like how there is pulling and tugging in my nation," he says sadly. "I want all denominations-forget all party cards-let's put things back together again."Thunderbolt pointed out he is no stranger to prayer.
"From a child I have been praying, and I have no intention of stopping now. I pray harder now," he says with conviction.Thunderbolt is happy to be called a defender of the pan, as an Elder with Desperadoes for some 50 years. He is not disturbed with the perception that he is a bad man."I don't raise my hand; it is only in the ring...but no one disrespects Thunderbolt. I treat everyone with respect," he reminds.
For all his hard work he is yet to receive an award, or recognised by his peers, but undaunted he soldiers on."I leave everything in the hands of the Lord." he signs off, but not before thanking the late Ray Appollon and Des the Artist for guiding his wrestling career.
