Here we go again with another year of school. Every year I write about what students need to do in order to succeed academically. But this year hitting the books, studying hard, organising that homework and creating an atmosphere conducive for studying isn't first and foremost on my mind.School is much more than a place where students go to study subjects. It's a place where students learn–or should be learning–how to become caring, productive citizens and leaders for tomorrow.
May this be the year that everyone–parents, students and teachers–discovers ways to deal with the problems of our society and our world, starting with how to treat everyone equally and fairly. It's time for everyone to understand the importance of respect in school. Teachers should always be mindful of creating an aura of respect around them. They should realise that respect is something that is earned through kindness and fairness. No one can demand respect. It must be earned.
