Trinidad & Tobago Guardian Online
You are here
My name is Dwayne Kenny and I do a moonlight bioluminescence stand-up paddle-board tour of Bon Accord Lagoon. I’m originally from Port of Spain but I’ve been living in Tobago for 12 years. Since I was a child, I’ve come to and loved Tobago. My parents have a picture of me with water-wings on on the beach at Pigeon Point when they didn’t even have huts on the beach. I tell foreigners: Trinis drive at 200mph, Tobagonians drive in reverse. But, if you like the outdoors life and the sea, there really is no other place to live. I look at what my friends in Trinidad do, Monday to Friday: they get up; they’re in traffic; they’re at work; they go back in traffic; they hit the gym; and then they go to bed.
I surf at five in the morning, work is one minute away, I get out of work at five, five-thirty, I can get in another hour-and-a-half surf! If I want to to go to Trini for my “fete fix”, it’s a 20-minute flight. And I’m not a fan of traffic! I went to Fatima. There were four classes in my year. And there were, maybe, ten white boys. Your friends were Chinese, African, Indian. That kinda trained me forlife. When you get someone who is not so open in their head, you just let that wash off your back. I may or may not be able to convince that person but I could definitely choose whether I let him ruin my day or not. My Fatima friendships persisted all my life. If anybody from Fatima wants to come to Tobago, I’m the guy they call.
