Kicksing about serious matters
This columnist concurs with colleague columnist Clevon Raphael’s comment that parliamentarians (mainly MPs in the House of Representatives) engage in bacchanal, name-calling and crass vulgarity in the Chamber in which deep and vigorous debate should be illuminating the way forward.
This is happening (and it has been like that for decades now—remember Explainer: “dey kicksing in Parliament”) while the society is experiencing crises at several levels, and as no government has been able to trigger new “growth poles” into existence, or new dynamism in the private sector. Instead, we all wait for energy prices to climb to collect rent and for government to distribute patronage for the next election campaign.
Debates amount to no more than polemics that merely scratch the surface of the conversation that should be taking place.
However, where I depart from Raphael’s observations is to say that the shallow bacchanalia gives the country an insightful opportunity to analyse the displays of ineptitude and mauvais langue to discern something about the nature of the politicians and their parties. Government ministers and their former colleagues are giving us a front-seat viewing post of the sordid and corrupt practices that have taken place in government over the last three and one-half years. “Mout open and tory jump/ing out.”
