Lock them up, throw away the key
Undoubtedly concerned like the rest of the country about the cancer that is the crime challenge problem in T&T, President Anthony Carmona asked his audience in Tobago last Saturday: “Is the response to gang warfare to lock them up and throw away the key, or do we need to comfort and confront a deeper social issue?”
Since His Excellency was addressing the Champion of Peace awards ceremony organised by the Mediation Board, I would like to think he was asking us to think about whether more attention should be paid to the need for greater social interventions in coming to grips with our numero uno issue rather than punishing the miscreants for their abominable anti-social behaviours.
The story did not say what option he would have chosen and I think that the President was just throwing out ideas for national discussion on how we could come to grips with the crime scenario. In as much as he has asked whether we should lock them up and throw away the key, I think I am within my right to exercise my option as the good President has requested that we do.
