While illegal guns have been linked to the brutal, violent and horrific murders committed on a daily basis for the past three weeks, to what extent have authorities adopted an effective, meaningful strategy to intercept the movement of illegal guns in T&T?
Even though the Prime Minister must be commended for ratifying a small arms treaty, it is a recognised fact that illegal arms continue to enter, as do illegal drugs, victims of human trafficking and human smuggling. Finance Minister Larry Howai expressed a degree of optimism when he remarked: "We will win the war against crime," as published in the Trinidad Guardian.
However, it is not that simple, when one understands the complexities and convergences in the global criminal industry and the linkages between violent homicidal acts and white-collar criminal activities.
Admittedly, this country possesses both porous and non-porous borders, however, borders do not ship or transport illegal weapons. Furthermore, it is a global fact that transnational organised crimes pose the greatest threats to the security, stability, rule of law and democracy of nations.
