Why not try a meatless Monday?
It’s Monday: don’t-eat-anything-with-a-face-day. Have you ever heard of “Meatless Mondays”? It’s one of the easiest ways to reduce your footprint on the environment. Rising sea levels, crashing eco-systems, holes in the ozone layer, 150 acres of rainforest lost every minute of every day; environmental issues seem so overwhelming that we can be discouraged from dealing with them. Often, we just don’t know where to start. I always say: let’s start with the low-hanging fruit.
The average Trinbagonian doesn’t really worry much about CO2 emissions. While the rest of the world tries to reduce CO2 emissions, we generously subsidise fuel and energy costs. We’re a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), among those most at risk from sea-level rise and climate change. The government acknowledges this, but local elections are around the corner, and it reasons that voters want short-term appeasement, regardless of consequences later, rather than sustainable development and progressive leadership. So far, government’s response to CO2 emissions has been a disgrace. A few hundred incandescent light bulbs changed for compact fluorescent light bulbs for which there are no recycling facilities, millions of dollars from the Green Fund misused on renewable energy for police surveillance bays, and solar-powered external lighting for community centres.
