Public policy and breastfeeding
I was not here when the Napa imbroglio started and two mothers were ejected from the audience for breastfeeding their babies, so it’s hard for me to comment except to say that I was pretty surprised.
I have seen women breastfeeding in all sorts of place in T&T and have never heard of anyone complaining or of a woman being asked to leave. In fact I used to look on the occasional breastfeeding “sit-in” that periodically takes place in North America after a woman has been told not to breastfeed in public as a sign of their backwardness and sexual hang-ups with the breast.
No, that could never happen to our women. We could beat them, shoot them, soot them, insult them and bad-talk them, but stop them from breastfeeding? Nah! Since the initial incident, the story has created its own ramifications with a bewildering series of conflicting remarks coming from the “authorities.”
The best discussion I have heard on the whole sorry issue was sent to me by a friend. I propose to quote her, with some minor editing on my part. “The point that no one really seems to be picking up is the fact that someone must be either misinformed or lying. It seems it is now the norm from the Government down to say whatever you want, try to shut people up, whether it is true or not. And if it’s to do with women and children, well...Just like you can lie in politics, present false documents, etc, lie and say what you like.
