Trinidad & Tobago Guardian Online
You are here
Red, white, black...and pink
My name is Rosie Mohammed and I’m a volunteer with the Cancer Society of Trinidad and Tobago.
I’m from the Diego Martin area. I grew up in the San Juan area, but got married to this lovely gentleman and he took me down to the West. But I’ve never gotten into the habit of saying, “San Won.” I grew up hearing it called, “Sah Wah.” But then I’ve recently heard people saying “La-ven-tee” and not “La-vent-il.”
I’m married to Nizam Mohammed, but Nizam Mohammed-with-hair-on-his-head. Not the Parliamentarian. We have four grown daughters and six grandchildren.
Being a grandmother is a two-hour job. Nizam and I take the grandchildren for two hours, treat them, ice cream, popcorn, cake, KFC, carry them and spoil them to the hilt. And then take them back to the parents. Yes. On an odd occasion, they can spend the night. But usually we’ll take them to the beach, take them to the pool and take them back.
I’m doing events management at Arthur Lok Jack [Graduate School of Business]. I’ve been behind a desk for so long, just pushing paper, I just want to be out and about. Just a little change at this age in life. Let’s see, as time goes by, if I can treat having the grandchildren as an event to manage.
I grew up in a Muslim home but we were never really pushed in any direction. I was baptised in the Roman Catholic faith but, as I became older, I found the Pentecostal faith on my own.
