Abram Lord All Smite He
—The Book of Kenrick Part IX In November 2011, I was called by my Uncle Godfrey—God the Uncle—to sum up the Bible in the voice of Kenrick, a man about our town, the kind of fella who has a jersey from every political party ever formed anytime, anywhere in T&T, but never spent an election day anywhere but Maracas Beach with a girl from Sweden. Kenrick and I have summarised Genesis Ch 1-13 and the Passion Play of the Gospel according to Matthew so far.
I’m doing a summation because the Bible contains too much verbiage to do a translation. Indeed, in the Old Testament, where you can have two pages straight of who-begat-whom or who-smite-who, it often deteriorates from the Word to the Mutterings of God. I chose the King James Version because it is the one most God-fearing Pentecostals swear by, even if that necessitates accepting that the sacred revealed text of the Mumblings of God were agreed upon by a few dozen civil servants working for a probably homosexual English monarch 1,611 years after God’s son got himself killed to deliver the original message.
