After ILP leader Jack Warner's brief occupation last week of the Government Parliament backbench, yesterday he was alongside the Opposition, chatting heartily with PNM's Marlene McDonald and Terrence Deyalsingh prior to proceedings.A loud cackle arose from the group. PP MPs didn't take them on. Anil Roberts was back after his reported "boycott" and Tim Gopeesingh didn't seem burdened by additional responsibilities, acting as Finance Minister with the three Finance jefes overseas.
Away from the Parliament though, political play has started shifting as various impending internal party polls stand to reshape the landscape ahead of the general election year.PNM's leadership contest faces a challenge from To Preserve the Balisier group whose spokesman Dr Bose Sharma says TPTB has a wide "ground" network. PNMites are awaiting election rules at next Saturday's General Council and revelation of TPTB's choice for challenger.
Increased spotlight on lady vice chairman Penny Beckles following her Senate removal by PNM leader Keith Rowley has produced her as a contender and possible threat to Rowley. Support is being expressed from various party levels despite allegations about her performance that accompanied–and set the stage–for announcement of her Senate axing. Whether the leadership issue figured in the Senate shift, the "performance" allegations haven't been denied by PNM leadership.
