The Pisa tests are conducted by the OECD to determine the standing of countries with regard to science, mathematics and reading.The participants are 15-year-old students and some half a million students were tested in the 2012 version. Sixty-five countries were involved.
The East Asian countries strengthened their dominance. Shanghai-China, Hong Kong-China, Singapore, Japan and South Korea topped the lists in the overall ratings. In mathematics, Shanghai occupied the first place, with Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Macaw, China and Japan following.T&T did not participate in the tests this time around. In 2009, however, we did. In every category T&T's score was statistically significantly lower than the OECD average.
In the overall reading scale, the OECD average was 493. T&T's score was 416 while that of Singapore was 526. In mathematics, the OECD average was 496. T&T's score was 414 and that of Singapore was 562.In science, the OECD average was 501. T&T scored 410 and Singapore 542.Singapore consistently scored over 100 points above T&T in every single category. They again came within the top five in the 2012 tests.In 2009, T&T was in the last quarter of the table.
