I have learned the reason people respond differently to any situation. “Psychologists will categorise our range of reactions, including emotions, by several theories,” says Psychology Today.

LEST WE FORGET
No use pretending: 2013 was a challenging year. Locally, libraries were burning to the ground with the deaths of numerous Elders. On the flipside it was also a year of achievement by young nationals here and internationally. My next two articles look at the twin sides of 2013 so we can prepare for 2014. This first article looks at Elders we lost. The year 2012 was ground zero for our Golden Age generation. 19,000 of 20,000 VIP Elders died by that year. In 2013 I watched the passing of elder family members and friends…A glance at Facebook profiles showed many friends also suffering such losses. Last year saw the passing of strongwilled survivors who held enormous amounts of critical national information.
Here, in no order, are some of those we lost: Justice Ulric Cross—WWII veteran airman, the most decorated West Indian of World War II, super diplomat/judge, all-round James Bond type hero; Luise Kimme—genius sculptor and visual artist, Muse of Tobago; Penguin—calypsonian writer of classics like Look de Devil Dey, A Deputy is Essential, and Sorf Man; Stanley Marshall—brilliant Trinidad Theatre Workshop actor who owned such roles as Moustique in Derek Walcott’s Dream on Monkey Mountain; Syl Dopson—footballer with champion side Shamrock and musical legend, leader of the seminal Kaiso All Stars; Louis Homer—journalist, champion of folklore and heritage; Narsaloo Ramaya—one of the country’s most respected violinists and Indian classical musicians, one of the founders of the National Council of Indian Culture; Jeffrey Chock—one of the Caribbean’s greatest photographers, dedicated visual poet of east Port-of-Spain and the Carnival.
