T&T talent crosses the globe

This week concludes my list of Trini global achievements in 2013. This list contrasts with our list of Elder deaths, our murder, corruption and scandal lists. This list says that somehow we still create world-beating talent—and that if our leaders paid attention for half a second we could convert dozens of achievers into thousands. The challenge is to democratise opportunity. We must choreograph individual points of light into an airport runway of lights to help land our national brand, products, and the next generation of T&T talent, safely.

 

Model Renee Bhagwandeen got selected for America’s Next Top Model and reached the second-to-last episode. She shrugged off the disappointment, being voted 19th most beautiful woman in the world and Top 5 most influential person under 25 in Florida. She’s now one of the few Black official Guess girls and modelled for many metropolitan department stores. She also walked for Michelle Obama’s designer Laura Smalls and is negotiating more deals.

 

Warner-signed musician Theophilus London—a favourite of GQ, Esquire, and Jay Z—revealed his new album Vibezz will be dedicated to his late aunt and he will release a new mixtape and an EP. Chris Leacock, aka Jillionaire, is part of Major Lazer ,the biggest DJ outfit in the world. They signed a record deal, released an album, and embarked on a world tour which passed through Trinidad. His solo career accelerated with headline gigs and tours across Europe, Asia/Australia, and North and South America, with guest-mixes for BBC Radio 1, MTV, and more.
